Founded in September 1983, the Mosabacka Big Band is named in Swedish after the district of Tapanila in Helsinki where most of its members lived.

The idea was to bring the excitement of swing and big band music to the attention of a wider public through concerts, dances and corporate functions.

The band plays frequent concerts, and has performed at international festivals, including the Imatra Big Band Festival, as well as at festivals in Estonia and Ukrania, in addition to radio and TV broadcasts.  This year, the band is appearing with singer Sofia Finnilä at the Baltic Jazz Festival.

In its 27 years, the band has had several distinguished conductors, including Petri Juutilainen, Eino Virtanen, Sven Nygård and Olli Pitkänen.  The current leader is composer/arranger/saxophonist Roger Freundlich
